Sewer service for a working downtown district
Many of downtown's laterals were laid long before modern plumbing codes existed. Vitrified clay pipe in four-foot sections, joined with mortar or early rubber gaskets, makes up the bulk of the old system — and after seventy or eighty years those joints offset, crack, and invite root intrusion. A single displaced joint can snag paper and solids until the line chokes, and because downtown lots are narrow with buildings close to the street, the lateral run is short but hard to reach without disturbing sidewalks or storefront aprons. Routine camera inspection and prompt repair keep these older lines flowing without tearing up the district.
Restaurant and retail spaces along 2nd Avenue and the downtown side streets put unusual demand on the sewer system. Commercial kitchens discharge grease, starch, and food solids all day, which coat the inside of older clay pipe and narrow it from the inside out. Floor drains, mop sinks, and dishwashers add to the load during every rush. We hydro jet these lines back to full diameter, install accessible cleanouts where they are missing, and set maintenance schedules that fit around business hours so kitchens stay open.
